Identify what you want the television to show
Screen mirroring generally reproduces what is on your device screen, while a supported casting or streaming option sends selected media to a receiver. The practical distinction is whether you need to display the whole interface or just the programme. The available choices depend on your app, phone or computer, television and receiving device. Do not assume that a player supporting local playback automatically supports every casting protocol or every television model.
Check the app and receiver together
Google's guidance for casting to Google TV requires a compatible app or Chrome and the same Wi-Fi network. Apple also documents AirPlay streaming and screen mirroring as distinct actions with compatible receivers. Identify which route your equipment supports and follow that manufacturer's instructions. Look for the receiving device by name and confirm it is your own screen before connecting. A missing cast button is a reason to check app support, not to enter account credentials into an unrelated casting website.
Test picture, sound and controls
Start a short programme and verify that both picture and sound reach the intended screen. Test pause, resume and stopping the session. If you use mirroring, remember that other content shown on your device may appear on the television, so close private messages first. Compare the result with local playback if the image is blank or unstable. Keep your device connected as required by the chosen method and do not assume background or locked-screen behaviour is identical across applications.
Keep account limits in the comparison
Casting support does not increase the simultaneous streams allowed on your subscription. Ask how your chosen setup is counted before adding another screen, and close test sessions when finished. Record the player, receiving device, connection method and any error if you need support. If casting is unsupported, check whether a compatible player can run directly on the television or streaming device. Confirm that option with support before purchasing hardware or a separate player licence.
